Monkey Feet

by Jessica Thomas on November 7, 2011

Code Monkey’s on break, but I still have monkey on the brain, or on the feet rather. One of my coworkers walked out the other day wearing a pair of really odd shoes that made his feet look weird. Kind of monkey-like (since that seems to be the going theme). This post isn’t meant to be an advertisement, but the shoes looked something like this:

And they were made by these guys.

Apparently there is a new barefoot trend in running. Some contend it’s better for the knees?

I’m going to give barefoot running a shot, and I’ll let you know how it goes. If I run “barefoot” and my left knee still flairs up and makes popping noises, I will call my experiment a failure. I just took a five minute run on my toes to try it out. (Sweating as I write this.) Why we have to buy special shoes to run on our toes, I’m not sure. I bet we can blame it on someone with a graduate degree in marketing.

That’s what I’ve been up to: daydreaming about my glory days as a middle school cross country and track star and lamenting the fact that I’m too rickety to run. However, if I run on my *toes* perhaps that could all change and I will begin running 6 minute miles again.

On the writing front, I’ve been working here and there behind the scenes. I’m part of a writing group at the moment, sponsored by Chila Woychik at Port Yonder Press. For our first quarter challenge, every Team PYP member was tasked with writing a 1K-word flash fiction piece. At the end of the quarter all the stories were read by judges and I wound up with an honorable mention. Woot!

Part of the Team PYP challenge is to send our pieces out to reputable mainstream markets in hopes of publication. I haven’t sent mine anywhere yet because I need a name for my Christ-figure. Right now I refer to him a couple times as “He”, and it’s not cutting it. So, if you can think of a name for a Jesus who exists in a far future world in which death is illegal, let me know. I could really use some help!

That’s what’s up with me. What’s up with you?

I know a family of engineers who swears by these shoes. But ff your knees hurt, you probably need vit D. My knees don’t hurt much since taking extra D in the fall and winter. 35 IUs per lb of body weight per day–that’s what you need, but most people don’t get it.

I do take vitamin D, actually, and I feel a lot better since I started it. My knee issue is left over from child hood arthritis I believe, so unfortunately, I think I’m just always going to have to treat it with extra TLC.

Jessica,

I love the new look of your blog! Congrats on the honorable mention. I trust the Lord will open the right door for you, friend. Keep writing.

And wow, your little guy is one now too! Crazy. They are growing up way too fast. Enjoy each day.
